01:30:28
I read that also...definitely consider your own investments

01:30:56
As an aspiring engineering student, what is some advice you would give to take on a career where you will be underrepresented?

01:31:32
I’m not Latina but I can relate to this so much. My parents insisted that I prioritize college but at the same time staying close to family was essential. It was CSUN or UCLA for them - that’s it. I mentioned out-of-state school once and they were like “LOL? You will be commuting from home, thank you.”

01:32:02
@Annie that is so common I feel

01:33:11
Great question! I suggest looking into engineering organizations like the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. We actually have one at COC and there are always chapters at universities. They help to feel like you are not doing it alone and get you ready for a workplace that might not be as diverse as what you expect.

01:33:59
@Kimberly Hernandez - We also have a STEM Equity Alliance here at COC, a great way to connect and find support.

01:34:29
@Kimberly - connection is powerful. Look at others who have been in your position. Consider what has worked for them and what hasn't? What are lessons you can possibly take? Connection is also important for morale. Also, don't be shy to find allies who may not look like you or be like you. Joining clubs OR making relationships w/ supportive professors is so important

01:35:35
Sometimes also ignorance and not having the support from your parents is a big factor

01:37:48
What is some advice on how to highlight the challenges Latinos/Hispanics/etc, overcome? I am currently applying to transfer to uc's and am honestly having a hard time trying to put my latina background into words for the personal insight questions

01:38:01
Thank you to everyone that gave me advice! I really appreciate it and will look into the chapters and alliances!

01:39:43
Jennifer - you could have a mentor read your letter before sending it in. I always appreciate an extra set of eyes! Also, the folks at the LatinX Alliance could probably help you.

01:39:51
*Jennyfer

01:43:39
^^^ Agreed w/ Pamela. @Jennyfer speak from the heart and your personal experiences. If you can, speak to an advisor not only at your current college but also at the institution you are hoping to transfer to and ask what they seek.

01:44:48
Agreed w/ that Ciara. We do gotta work harder.

01:46:13
Jennifyer, great question! I have been working on my entrance essay for my Master's so i can relate. Something so simple you can do is BE HONEST with yourself! I sat down with a pen and paper and wrote down key moments in my life and a lot of those hurdles and life experiences absolutely connected with my life growing up as a Latina and Hispanic. Your heart will pour out into those words, stay encouraged! You got this! :)
